When my kids were younger, long car trips often turned into battles against boredom. Like countless parents during holidays, I searched for screen-free ways to keep them engaged without a portable DVD player.
To ease the tedium, I've curated these simple, effective games based on real family road trips. They're budget-friendly, foster creativity, and have saved many drives.

Pick a specific department or license plate number (trickier with newer formats!) and challenge everyone to spot cars with it within a set time. The one who finds the most wins!
For younger kids, switch to spotting cars by color or a particular model.

Select a favorite kids' artist and pop in the CD. Sing along enthusiastically, and keep going acapella even after it ends – just keep the volume parent-friendly!

The game leader says a word, and players take turns finding rhymes. Switch words often: hedgehog, sheep, can, brown, boy…
For word chains: Start with a word, then link the next by sound or association. Example: mum, child, baby, baba, rum, Italy, pasta, massage…

Think of an object; kids ask yes/no questions to guess it. For variety, switch to characters like cartoon heroes.

Play classic audio tales like those narrated by Marlène Jobert, or revisit childhood favorites such as Pierre et le Loup (Peter and the Wolf) and Carnival of the Animals.
Even better, invent your own story together – add a sentence each in turn for endless fun.
Bonus tip: Get creative with variations! Safe travels, and share your favorite games in the comments below.
