Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic Review – A Magical Family Tradition We've Cherished for Years

Christmas and Disney make an unbeatable duo. Beyond the annual blockbuster films lighting up cinemas, the magic comes alive on ice. This holiday season, catch Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic in Utrecht and Amsterdam. As dedicated fans who've attended annually for years, we experienced the Utrecht premiere firsthand.

The magic of Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic

As a child, my first Disney memory was watching Dumbo in the cinema during Christmas break – the train ride to the big city, the plush red seats, and that heartfelt story. Over 35 years later, I'm back on that train with my own kids, heading to the Utrecht premiere of Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic.

My youngest, dressed as Elsa, exclaims, "We're seeing Frozen on ice!" Her brother corrects her: "No, it's Disney on Ice with all the characters, not just Elsa."

More than 50 Disney characters

He's spot on – Disney's 100-year legacy features countless beloved tales, showcased here with over 50 iconic characters. En route to the venue, we spot fellow fans in princess costumes. The lobby buzzes with holiday cheer: twinkling Christmas trees amid merchandise stalls. "Mom, can I get an Elsa doll?" I deflect: "The show's starting soon." We settle into our seats.

The arena isn't as chilly as expected. Skaters warm up the crowd before Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy take center ice, brainstorming their next big film story.

Acrobatics on the ice

The adventure begins with Pinocchio. "Mom, those aren't puppets – they're real people!" My kids' awe is priceless, but I can't linger; breathtaking jumps and spins unfold at breakneck speed.

Next, a modern twist: Finding Nemo. Nemo, Dory, and Marlin glide flawlessly, with stunning costumes and sets that capture the underwater world perfectly.

Princesses shine on the ice

The princess segment dazzles: Cinderella, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Ariel, Tiana, and Snow White pair with their princes for elegant lifts and intricate maneuvers, earning thunderous applause. The show builds to its peak.

Enter Elsa – the crowd erupts. Frozen commands a generous segment, with hilarious Olaf and jaw-dropping jumps keeping everyone hooked. My son notes, "This part's long," but loves it. During a brief intermission for the restroom, we dash back – narrowly missing Aladdin, as my son scouts ahead.

Going by too fast

Marching soldiers stump us briefly: Toy Story! Followed by Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. The grand finale unites all skaters, but it feels rushed post-intermission. I'd shift the break earlier and end with Frozen – our sole critique. Overall, top-tier production: pro skaters, gorgeous costumes, seamless sets. A perfect family holiday outing.

Like 35 years ago, we head home buzzing with Disney magic. "I want to see Frozen on ice again tomorrow!" my daughter pleads. My son adds, "It ended too soon." His fix: "Let's binge all the movies this break!" Disney and Christmas? Timeless magic.
