On Spain's Costa Brava, you'll discover breathtaking beaches perfect for a memorable family beach holiday. Beyond the popular long sandy stretch of Platja d'Aro, hidden gems like Sa Cova, Tamariu, and Cala de la Fosca offer serene spots for swimming with young children. As a family traveler who's personally visited all eight with our kids—who gave their enthusiastic approval—here's my curated top 8 list. Planning a Costa Brava trip? Take this guide along!

A beach holiday on the Costa Brava wasn't our first choice this summer. The thought of a 1,400 km drive with three kids in the car felt daunting, no matter the games we'd play. Read also: Stress before vacation—the journey alone is hell!
But a last-minute deal to the region's most beautiful beaches changed everything. We packed up Friday after school, stayed overnight in Dijon, and arrived at our three-bedroom mobile home in Cristina d'Aro (near Platja d'Aro). It became an unforgettable family adventure: daily beach explorations, immersing in Spanish culture, savoring tapas, and a fun day in Barcelona with the kids. Hola, Costa Brava!
Pro tip: Snorkeling here is exceptional—pack your masks to dive into the underwater world!
Based 5 km from Platja d'Aro—the Costa Brava's second-largest resort—all eight beaches are a quick 30-minute drive away. Heading south to Tossa de Mar? Opt for the scenic coastal route; the cliff views are spectacular, though allow extra time.
In Platja d'Aro, alongside the expansive Gran Platja, lies the idyllic cove of Sa Cova—one of the coast's finest. Park for free near Cala Rovira (another lovely spot), then follow the cliffside path and stairs on the left. This sheltered bay offers calm waters, ideal if waves pick up at Cala Rovira. Note: No lifeguard like at Cala Rovira, but its intimate scale kept it safe and peaceful for us. Sa Cova topped our list, with Cala del Pi a close second.
Tucked away in Platja d'Aro, Cala del Pi avoids the crowds. Enter beside Hotel del Pi (open to all) with free parking. Descend the stairs to stunning views, soft sand perfect for toddlers, and prime snorkeling. Locals flock here for the pristine nature, gentle slope, and crystal-clear sea—mass tourism-free.
Tamariu's charming sandy beach boasts a spotless promenade lined with affordable, excellent restaurants. End your day with fresh tapas—pure bliss. Parking was just €2.60 for the day. Snorkelers, bring gear: colorful fish abound.
Near Palamós, this gently sloping sandy beach is a family favorite for safe play and swimming. Our highlight: floating back on inflatable rings with the waves. Don't miss Palamós harbor at 5pm, when fishing boats unload fresh catches of fish, shrimp, and seafood.
South of Platja d'Aro, this less-crowded beach sits in a picturesque setting. The drop-off is steeper—better for older kids who'll love the offshore diving platform with stairs.
Gran Platja's long sandy expanse and vibrant boulevard make it a resort highlight. Weekends buzz, but weekdays offer relaxed vibes. Boulevard eateries serve authentic Spanish fare. Ranked seventh for its touristy feel, but it's truly delightful 😉.
Clear waters, natural beauty, plus amenities like loungers, lifeguards, and restaurants. The sea cools you off quickly on hot days.
Prime for diving and snorkeling, though pebbles and crowds detract slightly. Great for a day trip—we enjoyed it despite ranking last.

Spain's now on our radar for next summer—we've barely scratched the Costa Brava's surface. Heading there? Have a blast. Pro packing tip: Mini toiletries are a game-changer 😊.
