Why Denmark's East Danish Islands Deserve a Spot on Your Family Bucket List: Our Honest Experience

Denmark surprised us completely. We'd never considered it for a family getaway before, but this year we explored Lolland-Falster, South Zealand, and Møn for the first time. Partnering with Dansk.nl, Denmark's holiday specialists, we crafted an unforgettable 8-day itinerary. As seasoned travelers, we're sharing why these islands blew us away.

Denmark is remarkably accessible—just 650 km from our home in southern Brabant to Lolland-Falster, the gateway to the East Danish Islands, where our trip began.

Lolland-Falster, Zealand and Møn

The holiday truly began en route. With carsick-prone kids, past trips focused on survival, not scenery. This time, departing early on a sunny Saturday, we drove north through unfamiliar parts of the Netherlands and Germany. Everyone enjoyed the views—even from the backseat. Before long, we reached Puttgarden, boarding the Scandlines ferry instantly, thanks to Dansk.nl's flexible all-day ticket. No wait, seamless boarding.

The 45-minute crossing was a highlight: spacious decks, shops, and stunning sea views under a blue sky. We weren't even in Denmark yet, and we were hooked!

Our stay at holiday park Lalandia Rødby

Dansk.nl tailored our booking for relaxation—perfect after school stress, job changes, and family demands. Lalandia Rødby delivered: our Nordic Plus holiday home was spacious, colorful, with a private terrace, sauna, hot tub, washer-dryer (unused on vacation!), and modern amenities. Just a 10-minute walk to the beach and park center.

The center buzzed with activities: ice skating, bowling, indoor playgrounds, trampolines, even skiing. Our 10- and 12-year-olds adored the ice cream parlor and Aquadome waterpark, with thrilling slides and a massive tornado ride. Ideal for tweens and teens alike—a subtropical paradise they never wanted to leave.

Our activities on Lolland-Falster and the other East Danish islands

1. Chalk cliffs of Møn

Reader recommendations led us straight to Møns Klint, Denmark's longest chalk cliffs, an hour's relaxed drive from our base. Quiet two-lane roads let us savor the scenery.

The Geocenter Møns Klint wowed us—an interactive gem even our museum-averse kids loved. They marveled at cliff formation demos and flaming water experiments. "This is cool!" our teen exclaimed, filming excitedly.

Post-lunch, we descended 468 steps to the beach. The dramatic white cliffs against the sea were breathtaking—photos don't do it justice. The climb back was worth every step. A must-see!

2. Camp Adventure, adventure in the forest

The kids balanced park time with Camp Adventure's treetop trails: 10 courses, including beginner-friendly ones, weaving through South Zealand's woods.

Under clear skies amid lush greenery, the vibe was relaxed despite crowds. Hammocks, campfires—pure bliss. Watch our highlights.

Treetop course mastering

English safety briefings preceded the fun—no harnesses needed, but experts guided us. Long, fast ziplines immersed us in nature—exhilarating!

Burgundy Denmark

Danes love good food like Brabanders. Food trucks and picnic tables abounded; picnicking is a Danish staple everywhere.

Cap it with the new 45m observation tower: panoramic forest views. Our fear-of-heights mom stopped short, but the kids raved—another hit.

3. Swimming on our rest day

"Rest day" meant all-day swimming. The sea was scenic but chilly; the Aquadome's 26°C pools shone, with outdoor access on a sunny day. We conquered slides and rapids—pure family joy, no WiFi woes (signal was strong anyway).

4. Visit to Safari Park Knuthenborg on Lolland-Falster

Near charming Maribo village, Knuthenborg offered animals up close, a dino forest, playground—and we witnessed a wildebeest birth! See the magic.

After five idyllic days, we departed reluctantly—the East Danish Islands exceeded expectations. Dansk.nl nailed our wishes. Highlights: Møn's cliffs (parents' fave), Aquadome ice creams (teen's), Camp Adventure (daredevil's). Unanimous: sunny seas, adventures, family bonds.
