Mother-Daughter Adventure in Christmas Town Valkenburg: Caves, Markets, and Festive Magic

A long-awaited weekend getaway finally happened when Lotte and I headed to Christmas Town Valkenburg. Originally planned for four, it turned into a delightful mother-daughter trip after scheduling conflicts. We soaked up the enchanting holiday spirit in this festive city and can't wait to share every detail of our experience.

Christmas Town Valkenburg: Immerse Yourself in Holiday Spirit

As seasoned travelers who cherish the holiday season, Lotte and I fully embraced the magical Christmas atmosphere in Valkenburg. This destination offers everything needed to dive headfirst into festive cheer, perfectly setting the tone for the holidays.

Landal Castle de Cauberg as Our Base

We chose Landal Kasteeldomein de Cauberg as our home base, an ideal spot just a short walk from the action. Driving through the grand entrance, with its stunning views of the accommodations amid twinkling lights, felt like entering a fairy tale. After a full day of exploring, retreating to our spacious apartment—with luxuries like a private sauna and bubble bath—was pure bliss. For more on this park, visit their website.

Our Weekend Goals: Markets, Walks, Parade, and More

The cave-hosted Christmas markets sparked our interest, promising a unique holiday outing. Far from just a 'women's activity,' we spotted plenty of men enjoying the stalls alongside hearty food and drinks. Pairing markets with the Route d'Amuse walks made for an unforgettable itinerary.

Route d'Amuse: Festive Walks with Tastings

Four scenic routes weave through Christmas Town, each about 4km. We tackled the green route, guided by a detailed folder rich with Valkenburg's history. Passing castles, factories, and caves, we stopped at eateries for voucher-redeemable amuse-bouches and drinks—perfect fuel for more exploring. Kid-friendly options like poffertjes were available too. Our stops: Zoete Zoen at Landal, Daelhemer quarry, and Hotel Botterweck (skipping one due to detours). We savored ham with sweet-sour veggies and more. Details on Route d'Amuse.

Christmas Markets in the Caves

Two major cave markets draw crowds: Fluweelengrot and Gemeentegrot. Expect lines, especially weekends—visit late afternoon to avoid peaks.

Fluweelengrot Christmas Market

Shorter queues for online tickets (pro tip: buy on-site via mobile if needed). Inside, a cozy maze of stalls brimmed with decorations, lights, accessories, crafts, and treats like stroopwafels. Pleasantly busy, with on-site catering. Note: Some vendors prefer no photos. Entrance: €7.50/adult (discount for both caves on separate days). Open Nov 15–Dec 29.

Gemeentegrot Christmas Market

Europe's oldest underground market, but we viewed it lit up from outside. Same pricing and dates apply. More info here.

Exploring Valkenburg's Center

The town center sparkles with lights and Santa's Village, blending shopping and cheer. Busy yet vibrant afternoons/evenings feature heated terraces with blankets.

Dining Highlights in the City

At Pommes, customize fries with herbs, toppings (guacamole, peanut sauce), sauces, and snacks for generous portions. Prime parade-view seating. Nearby, admire illuminated Berkelpoort and Santa's Village.
