Overseas, every service on your smartphone incurs charges: calls, texts, data, and even voicemail (billed as a call to France). Once you cross the border, unlimited packages end—it's pay-per-use, by the minute, SMS, or data byte. Incoming calls cost the caller standard France rates, but you pay the foreign surcharge (varies by country). The only freebie: receiving SMS.
Is mobile internet free? Only on Wi-Fi. Steer clear of 3G or cellular data abroad, where pricing is per byte—heavy users of YouTube, maps, or streaming services risk massive bills. Disable push notifications too, to prevent automatic email downloads from draining your wallet.
Europe offers relief with capped rates: €0.51 max per minute for calls to French landlines or mobiles, €0.23 per minute to receive calls, and €0.13 per SMS (far better than ~€1 from the US to France).
To dodge surprises, EU users get automatic alerts at €50 data spend. For the rest of the world, contact your carrier's customer service before traveling to set up overrun notifications—they'll keep you informed as limits approach.
