Tips to survive the heat at a campsite

As of yesterday, after a few hot days, we can officially speak of a heat wave. But it is not only hot in the Netherlands, you can also enjoy a sultry summer with tropical temperatures for a long time in the southern European countries. If you go on holiday and stay at a campsite, it can get very hot as there is no air conditioning to hand. Here are some tips for surviving these hot days.

Keeps wind direction in mind

If you go out with your own tent, you have to take the wind direction into account when setting up your tent. Make sure the wind can blow in through the side with a mesh and let your tent air out all day. Choose a cool place to pitch your tent:preferably in a place where there is a natural pit or at the bottom of a valley. Warm air rises and the earth keeps your tent fresh.

Make your own shower

The heat can also be an advantage in nature. Live economically and ecologically at the campsite and make your own shower. Put together an empty water tank or bucket, a spray nozzle or the head of a watering can and hang your construction from a tree. Do you still want to heat your water slightly to avoid an ice cold shower? Then pour the water into a black garbage bag and put the bag in the container so that the water warms up throughout the day.

Bring reflective stickers with you

Reflective stickers on your tent ensure that the sun's rays are repelled. Your tent won't be sweltering after a full day in the sun. Bonus:you will quickly find your tent if you stay at a campsite!

Keep the bugs out

Heat is usually accompanied by a lot of annoying insects. Get them out of your tent in a natural way with herbs! Rosemary and water in a bowl or even smearing it on your skin or burning a piece of sage help to keep the critters at bay.

Choose a campsite with water nearby

Make sure you choose a campsite that has a swimming pool. Or combine your trip with cooling water sports. Take a dip in the sea or go kayaking, jet skiing or windsurfing if you stay at a campsite with a lake nearby.
