As of last month, visitors can now cross Norway's iconic Vøringsfossen waterfall via a remarkable new stair bridge perched 50 meters above the roaring cascade. Renowned as one of the nation's most breathtaking natural wonders, this 182-meter-high marvel in the Hardanger region alternates between mystical mists and sheer beauty. The innovative bridge adds thrill to the spectacle: 99 steps span 47 meters, climbing 16 meters for panoramic vistas of the falls and the dramatic Måbødalen valley below.
Designed by acclaimed Norwegian architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk, the bridge harmonizes architecture, engineering, and nature in a tradition of seamless innovation. Key considerations included unyielding safety and durability, seamless ties to the historic gorge road, landscape integration, and delivering an exhilarating experience with unobstructed waterfall views.
This bridge completes phase two of the Vøringsfossen site's expansion. Phase one in 2018 brought new paths, viewing platforms, parking, and a service building under Hotel Fossli. By 2023, additional viewpoints and a new toilet facility will finalize the transformation into a world-class attraction.
