New extraordinary bridge opened over Vøringsfossen

Great view:Since last month, visitors can cross Norway's most famous waterfall, Vøringsfossen, thanks to a spectacular new bridge at a height of 50 meters. Sometimes mystical, sometimes beautiful, but always spectacular:the 182 meter high Vøringsfossen in the western Norwegian region of Hardanger is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Norway. Now the popular natural spectacle has another attraction. You can cross the waterfall at a high altitude via a stair bridge. The staircase has 99 steps, overcomes a height difference of 16 meters and has a span of 47 meters. With a height of 50 meters above the waterfall, it offers a fantastic view over the waterfall and the Måbødalen, into which the Vøringsfossen flows.

The bridge was designed by the Norwegian architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk and with its unusual design fits into a long tradition of interaction between architecture, technology and nature. Numerous factors influenced the construction of the bridge. It had to be robust and safe, it had to be connected to the old gorge road, adapt to the landscape and of course guarantee a fantastic view and an exciting experience.

The expansion of the Vøringsfossen attraction will take place in several phases. In 2018, the first construction phase was completed with new paths, viewing platforms, parking spaces and a service building under the Hotel Fossli. The new stair bridge marks the end of the second phase. Further construction measures until the final completion of the expanded Vøringsfossen site in 2023 include the construction of more viewing points and a new toilet block.
