Gozo: Malta's Green Cultural Gem Bidding for 2031 European Capital of Culture

Gozo, the smallest island in the Maltese archipelago, earns its nickname as Malta's lush green sister. Brimming with rich culture and history, it's now bidding to become the European Capital of Culture in 2031. The island prioritizes preserving historic landmarks like the Xewkija windmill and Ġgantija Temples while championing environmental initiatives, including new bike-sharing stations akin to those in Valletta, Malta's capital.

Gozo Bids for European Capital of Culture 2031

Gozo's Minister Clint Camilleri announced in parliament that the island is vying for the prestigious European Capital of Culture title in 2031. Valletta, Malta's capital, held the honor in 2018, transforming it into a must-visit destination for its diversity and vibrancy. Experts anticipate this recognition will similarly elevate Gozo on the global tourism map.

Xewkija's 18th-Century Windmill Restored to Glory

In Gozo's Xewkija village, the unique 18th-century windmill—Malta's only one on an octagonal base—has been meticulously reconstructed at a cost of €500,000, largely funded by European grants. Renovations included replacing the concrete roof with traditional stone slabs, cleaning the stonework, and installing modern amenities like electricity and water, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Ġgantija Temples Mark 40th UNESCO Anniversary

Forty years ago, UNESCO designated the Ġgantija Temples a World Heritage Site, providing vital protection and funding for maintenance. Dating back to 3600–2500 BC, these are the world's oldest freestanding structures. Excavations in 1827 uncovered Venus figurines, likely used in ancient fertility rituals.

Expanding Bike-Sharing Stations Across Malta and Gozo

In 2018, Malta Public Transport launched a bike-sharing service to ease congestion and promote sustainability. By late 2020, stations were added in Gozo's Mgarr and Victoria, complementing sites near Valletta's university and bus terminal. This eco-friendly option reduces emissions, letting visitors explore sustainably. Popularity is rising, with 25 daily trips on average in 2019.
