Dunes, dikes, forests, beaches, lakes, and swamps—Friesland offers an unmatched variety of landscapes per square kilometer. Ideal for cycling and walking, with no mountains to conquer but endless panoramic views. This immersive environment revives the spirit. Dive into it via Friesland's interconnected pilgrim routes, blending history, nature, and tranquility.
Jabikspaad (150 km)
Since around 1000 AD, pilgrims from Europe journeyed to Santiago de Compostela for peace and prosperity. In 1500, Sint-Jacobiparochie emerged as Friesland's starting point. Walk the Frisian section from Sint-Jacobiparochie to Akkrum, passing villages amid unique terrains. Overnight in the historic church Ievers in Easterwierrum.
St. Odulphus Path (total 260 km)
Spanning 260 km across 15 themed routes in Southwest Friesland, Greidhoeke, and Gaasterland, this pilgrimage reveals landscapes and history. Enjoy silence, space, and serenity, visiting seven of Friesland's eleven cities. Stay at Het Weeshuis in Bolsward, a 400-year-old former orphanage turned shelter.
Bonifatius Monastery Path (12 stages of varying lengths)
Trace monastic history from mudflats to forests, following Willibrord and Boniface, who shaped Friesland's cultural landscape. Marvel at Wadden Sea coasts, clay polders, mound villages, moors, and woods. Visit Dokkum's Bonifatius Chapel and overnight at cozy B&B De Koesfabriek.
Claercamp Path (75 km)
This route winds through North Friesian woods from Zoutkamp to Sint-Jacobiparochie, passing Netherlands' tallest mound at Hegebeintum. Explore Claercamp Monastery Museum, once the North Netherlands' largest mother house (12th-16th centuries). Its motto: 'Terar dum prosim' (I may be consumed if I prove useful). Rest at B&B Bij De Pastorie in Reitsum.
Overnight in Historic Frisian Churches
Enhance your pilgrimage with 'tsjemping'—staying in churches ('tsjerke' in Frisian) like camping. Refugios offer simple, affordable spots (April-September) for route booklet or pilgrim pass holders from the Dutch Society of Saint Jacob. Highlights: De Nicolaes Tsjerke in Swichum, De Redbadtsjerke in Jorwert, De Piterkerk in Lippenhuizen.
