Like many aspiring authors, I first submitted my manuscripts to major publishing houses. After repeated rejections, I discovered self-publishing—a more accessible path to getting my work into readers' hands.
The traditional publishing route is a grueling obstacle course: endless submissions, rejection letters, follow-up calls, and emails—all too often ending in polite but unexplained refusals.
The Traditional Process
After trying established publishers (you know the ones) and receiving refusals months later, I turned to smaller houses with the same disappointing results. Paying for an author account? Far too costly—especially when you believe in your talent and don't want to foot the bill upfront. Fortunately, there are now proven ways to publish without spending a dime.
Self-Publishing Platforms
1) Lulu.com
Lulu.com, a U.S.-based platform, enables free publishing of any work using print-on-demand technology. From one copy to thousands, it's all possible.
In just a few steps, you create your book: select format, cover, back cover, paper type, and upload your file. I followed the process myself, tweaking my manuscript into a print-ready PDF (it took a few hours of trial and error). Set your selling price, order a proof copy, and you're set. Mine arrived in about three weeks—delivery has reportedly sped up since. Once approved, I ordered more for a launch event.
2) TheBookEdition (TBE)
TheBookEdition, the French equivalent of Lulu, proved even more user-friendly. Its clean interface offers practical advice on selling, marketing, and navigating publishing.
I tested it with another novel: file upload was straightforward, cover design intuitive (though fewer format options). Delivery was faster, and support more responsive. No upfront costs—you set the price based on print costs and desired profit. For example, if printing is €4.50 and you want €3 profit per copy, price at €7.50. I recommend it wholeheartedly for self-publishers.
The Drawbacks
Promotion falls entirely on you—the author handles marketing, unlike traditional publishing. That said, both platforms provide expert tips on advertising and sales channels. Success demands effort and perseverance, but it's achievable.
