As we bundle up in cozy sweaters this winter, it's worth considering our feathered friends. Battery-raised laying hens often spend their lives confined in stacked cages, bred solely for maximum egg production.

Once rescued, these hens struggle to adapt to outdoor life. Did you know they're crammed into multi-tiered cages? This reality highlights the importance of choosing organic or free-range eggs.

Battery hens typically have sparse feathers, making summer tolerable but winter brutal as temperatures drop.

Nicola Congdon, a 25-year-old from Falmouth, England, devised a clever solution: knitting tiny wool sweaters for her chickens. She cares for about 60 hens, 30 of which are former battery captives, while the rest have always been free-range.

"Raising awareness about the harsh conditions in battery cages is crucial—most people don't realize these hens lose their feathers by retirement," Nicola shares. "The sweaters keep them warm, add fun, and make identification easier!"

Now, Nicola and her mum, Ann, fulfill global orders for chicken sweaters. Rather than profiting, proceeds support an orphanage in South Africa.
