Alfred "Alfie" Date, recognized as Australia's oldest man at 109, dedicated his days to knitting miniature sweaters for little penguins in need.

Alfie, who never learned to say no, eagerly accepted a request from his nursing home staff on Australia's south coast to contribute his skills.

The Phillip Island Penguin Foundation approached them for help after oil spills threatened the penguins' insulating feathers. These birds, unique to southern Australia and New Zealand with just 32,000 on Phillip Island, required warmth to survive.

Using thick wool supplied by the nurses, Alfie drew on his 80 years of knitting experience, starting with a baby jacket for his nephew in the 1930s. He refined his craft raising seven children, 20 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

As reported in The Daily Telegraph in 2014, Alfie vividly recalled the Titanic sinking in 1912 and the World Wars. His secret to longevity? Simply "waking up every morning."

Global donations flooded in for the foundation, whose website notes the sweaters' practical role: oil mats feathers, chilling the birds and preventing hunting. The garments prevented toxin ingestion during cleaning, boosting survival rates.

In 2001, an oil spill affected 438 penguins on Phillip Island; 96% were saved thanks to these sweaters. Today, the foundation has ample stock from donors worldwide—no more needed.

Later, Alfie knitted scarves for friends and hats for premature babies to keep his hands nimble. Sadly, Alfie has since passed away, leaving a legacy of compassion.
