Flying During COVID-19: My First-Hand Experience from Schiphol to Kos

Curious about air travel amid the pandemic? Here's what to expect, based on my recent trip. I'll share practical tips from firsthand experience to help you travel safely and confidently.

COVID-19's Impact on Holidays

Many travelers are skipping flights this year due to COVID-19 uncertainties, opting for staycations or road trips instead. If you're still considering a flying holiday, read on for real insights.

Flying During COVID-19

To cut to the chase: I just returned from vacation via plane to test the changes firsthand. This report draws from my journey, including a video I shot at Schiphol, onboard, and upon landing in Kos.

Masks Are Mandatory Everywhere

Pack multiple medical-grade face masks—they're essential. Don yours upon entering Schiphol; staff enforce it strictly, even for children aged 6+. Homemade masks may not suffice.

Officially, replace after 4 hours, so bring extras. I managed with one for the whole trip, but compliance varies. Wear it throughout the flight, except briefly while eating or drinking. Some passengers lowered theirs without issue; I did too on the return due to nausea.

Airport Check-In Realities

Expect changes: Online check-in wasn't available outbound with TUI but was inbound. A TUI rep suggested arriving 2 hours early—don't. With fewer counters and slower processes, we arrived 2.5 hours early and boarded just 5 minutes before takeoff by jumping a priority line amid chaos.

Two young women ahead of us likely missed the flight. Staff seemed overwhelmed. For European flights, arrive 3 hours early.

Hand Luggage Restrictions

Most bags, including carry-ons, go in the hold to minimize aisle movement. Onboard, only a small bag under the seat is allowed.

Health Forms Are Required

Print and complete the RIVM health form in advance—it's checked before boarding. Countries like Greece require a Passenger Locator Form 24+ hours pre-departure, yielding a QR code scanned on arrival. This determines if you need an on-site COVID test.

Onboard the Aircraft

Seating appeared sparse outbound but filled up; one empty seat next to my son. Return had a few empties. Crew brief you: masks on always, use rear toilets only. Service is limited (once for purchases, twice for trash). Call for assistance via button.

Stay seated as much as possible, but move via toilet visits (mask off there). Seat-back bags are for used masks. Crew wear masks and gloves.

Post-Landing Procedures

Disembarking is staggered. Outbound, another flight went first. Inbound at Schiphol, by row numbers—back rows like mine waited longest.

Destination Airport Protocols

Rules vary: In Greece, remask outdoors before the terminal. Police scan QR codes, directing some to tests based on recent travel history. Mask up indoors; fines apply. Always check local regulations.

Final Thoughts on Flying During COVID-19

It's doable despite measures, though wearing a mask from Schiphol to destination is taxing. Factor in longer check-ins and extra forms. Worth it for that holiday getaway.
