The opening animation transported us straight into the Marvel superhero universe: Captain America, the bustling streets of New York City, and the iconic Statue of Liberty. My first thought? 'The USA could use some superheroes right now'... but that's another story 😉. Welcome to the Marvel Universe LIVE! show!
Table of contents
As part of Mamsatwork, we attended the premiere of Marvel Universe LIVE! in the Netherlands with our daughters, aged 7 and 5. We decided our 2-year-old son was a bit too young. Ahoy buzzed with excited fans—mostly parents with boys aged 4 to 10, but plenty of older Marvel enthusiasts filled the stands too. Entry and seating were seamless. To our surprise, our tickets were upgraded to premium Diamant seats, right in front of the arena stage, which looked impressive. Merchandise stalls at the entrance weren't overwhelming (a plus), though prices were steep. But the show is the star here.
At the heart of the action is the Cosmic Cube, the Marvel Universe's most coveted artifact of ultimate power. Thor shatters it to keep it from evil hands. To stop the villainous Loki, heroes like Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, and Wolverine team up. Cube fragments are scattered worldwide, and the heroes race to collect them. But facing fierce opposition from Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Madame Hydra, Red Skull, Andreth Killin, and Electra—who all crave world domination—can they prevail?
Prep your kids with the storyline beforehand; the fast-paced dialogue and complex vocabulary can be hard to follow live. While Dutch audiences know Spider-Man and Hulk well, other heroes and lore may be less familiar. Ultimately, it's the epic clashes between heroes and villains, amplified by stunning stunts, special effects, fireworks, and martial arts, that deliver the magic.
Action packed every moment. 'Wow! She can fight!' exclaimed a boy behind us as Black Widow showcased her prowess. My 7-year-old asked, 'Mommy, did that hurt?' Once I explained it was all choreographed, both girls relaxed and cheered through the battles. Cars flipped, motorbikes roared across the arena with jumps and flips, stunt performers soared, plummeted from heights, and even burst into flames. The set transformed seamlessly with clever mechanics, while the massive rear wall doubled as elevated scenery and a projection screen to enhance the narrative.
The 2-hour show, including a brief intermission, flew by with zero dull moments—though some repetition crept in. Constant arena activity kept eyes everywhere, occasionally overwhelming but always thrilling. Performers nailed precise timing to sync with pre-recorded audio. Our girls were hooked from start to finish, especially Hulk's grand finale. I worried our 5-year-old might find it scary, but she loved it. Ideal for slightly older kids due to the plot, yet a dazzling spectacle for families. We had an absolute blast.
PS: Local Tilburger Geoffrey Thompson stars as Spider-Man!
