On our final day of vacation, we headed to the Stubnerkogel cable car in Bad Gastein for a rewarding hike—and it delivered. While we could have explored more, here's our firsthand experience from seasoned family travelers.

The Stubnerkogel stands at 2,250 meters, the tallest of four mountains surrounding Bad Gastein—ideal for summer activities alongside Schlossalm, Graukogel, and Fulseck.
Choosing Stubnerkogel wasn't easy with limited time, but its unique 140-meter suspension bridge sealed the deal for our family. We skipped mentioning Schlossalm's kid-friendly paradise to ensure buy-in.
The kids loved the bridge, though its 140 meters feels more thrilling in description than reality. It's a fun highlight, but the downhill hikes steal the show. We crossed 'just for a bit.'
Scan your ticket barcode at the red spot for a free photo—simple, though retrieving it online proved tricky for us impatient hikers.
The views from the bridge are stunning, with a dizzying drop into the valley below.
Key spots include Glocknerblick (peering toward Grossglockner, which we'd summited the day prior) and the lower Felsenweg lookout.
Hiking here shines. We headed toward Europe's highest-elevated artwork, then crossed the suspension bridge past the mountaintop restaurant. After a quick apple break, we eyed a steep climb to a tempting peak—estimated at one hour.
It was steeper than expected, requiring breathers every 20 steps due to fitness and possible altitude effects. At 2:45 PM, with the last cable car at 3:45 PM, we turned back short of the summit—a regret, especially for my partner Frank, who aimed highest.
A scenic trail descends from the summit to the valley station. We covered the top-to-mid-station section (1-1.5 hours, family-friendly). Sweaty but rewarding, with sunny chatter and Coke breaks. Free-roaming cows and horses added charm—though our daughter remains wary post another adventure.
We caught the 4 PM cable car; full descent is worthwhile if time allows, transitioning from open alpine to forested paths.
For young kids, opt for Schlossalm's extras like bouncy castles, lake loops, and play trails.
Tip: We based in Viehhofen at Landal GreenParks Rehrenberg—spacious apartments, central for 1-hour drives to activities.
