Baumzipfelweg Hinterglemm Review: Our Family's Honest Take on This Austrian Treetop Walk

Not every day on vacation lives up to the hype. Our visit to Baumzipfelweg in Hinterglemm, Austria, was one of those mixed experiences—a 45-minute treetop walk that felt underwhelming despite a reasonable base price. As seasoned family travelers who've explored Krimml Waterfalls and beyond, here's our candid review.

Baumzipfelweg Austria

We arrived full of optimism after our epic hike to Krimml Waterfalls. This time, it was just a 30-minute drive from our base in Viehhofen, passing through picturesque Saalbach.

Heard about Baumzipfelweg through word-of-mouth rather than our Salzburgerland Card guide. A treetop walk promised adventure—how could it disappoint?

Parking at the Baumzipfelweg

The free parking lot is a 30-minute walk from the entrance. On this scorching day, we slathered on sunscreen first—lesson learned from past burns and sobering melanoma stats after blogging about it.

The uphill trek was tough on our sore legs from Krimml (day two muscle pain was brutal), but scenic streams kept the kids entertained. Note: A shuttle train is available—wish we'd known!

Treetops walk Hinterglemm

Kids lit up at the options: treetop walk, climbing park, and massive bouncy castles/trampolines. Swimming plans? Postponed.

Our daughter Lotte (just 1.30m in hiking boots) qualified for the climbing forest, but it required adult supervision. Husband Frank volunteered; my short shorts made harnesses a no-go (pro tip: wear longer pants).

Unlike our France trip last year where kids went solo, here accompaniment was mandatory. Check our France family activities blog for comparison.

The suspension bridge and the treetops

We prioritized the treetop walk. Crossed a sturdy suspension bridge with decent valley views—fun, not thrilling.

Then into the canopy: interactive stops like memory games, cowbell music, and animal footprint quizzes engaged the kids. The 45-minute route (we lingered) ended abruptly.

At €9 per person, it felt steep for non-spectacular views—perhaps overshadowed by Krimml's wow factor.

The Hochseilpark and the Jump & Slidepark

We deferred the 3-hour Hochseilpark (ropes course). Trampolines beckoned more.

Shock: Jump & Slidepark costs €12 (ages 8+) or €16 (16+) for 2 hours—but kids under 8? Wait, no: even older kids need paying adult chaperones (€32 extra for two adults just supervising).

Battle in principle?

This rubbed us wrong. We're fine paying for value, but charging for idle supervision feels like a cash grab.

Kids got our stance. We skipped after €19 for four Cokes and fries at the on-site spot. Pet the sheep, then headed out disappointed.

Final conclusion of the Baumzipfelweg day

Not our best day, but freed up time for Käpt'n Hook pool (free with Salzburgerland Card). Rested legs for Weisssee Glacier tomorrow!

PS: Lotte bolted when a free-roaming cow charged during her photo—hilarious speed!

TIP: Based at Landal GreenParks Rehrenberg in Viehhofen—ideal apartments, central for day trips (max 1-hour drives).
