Enough is enough: Long hours of uncomfortable sitting on airplanes could soon be history. While still in the concept stage, innovative sleeping pods are gaining serious traction among airlines. Luxury carriers are leading the way, but for the first time, affordable beds could extend beyond first class to economy travelers. Exciting times ahead!
Airplane seats are notoriously cramped: limited legroom, back pain, and zero sleep potential. UK-based Formation Design, experts in aviation interiors, space planning, and innovation, has proposed a game-changing solution. Their berth system reimagines the cabin layout entirely, swapping standard seats for compact lower berths and larger upper beds—optimized for efficiency and comfort.
The concept isn't entirely new. Etihad Airways, UAE's flagship carrier, outfits select Airbus A380s with lavish Residence suites spanning nearly 12 m², featuring 1.20 m-wide double beds, seating areas, showers, and a personal butler—for about €24,000 on 10 aircraft. Air France has also embraced seat-to-bed conversions in first class across 44 Boeing 777s, offering full-flat berths over 2 m long, 1.47 m privacy curtains, and 100% HD touchscreens for a serene journey.
