Photos and social networks:what are the habits of French people on vacation?

The winter holidays officially started this week and many families have planned a change of scenery during this 15-day period which leaves plenty of time to enjoy the good times. And precisely, to share their precious moments with the rest of the world – or at least their loved ones, it's a good start – holidaymakers do not hesitate to capture their every move and post them online. But what are the real habits of the French in terms of photography and social networks during their time off away from home? The travel search engine Kayak surveyed 1,000 holidaymakers, all over the age of 18, and the results may surprise you. The French are not stingy with photos, since they take an average of 42 shots (yes!) per day when they are on vacation, which gives a total of around 300 photos at the end of a week. If 63% of respondents wait until they get home to show them to those around them, 30% choose to post them on social networks. Unexpected fact:the latter who swear only by digital are slightly less numerous than those who decide to print them (35%), among which a majority of people under 35 (45%), but also over 55 years (26%). Proof that vintage particularly appeals to younger generations...

The selfie, the real star of the holidays

The preferred type of photo is of course the selfie:78% of French people would take at least 1 per day. Nearly one in three travelers (28%) admit to taking more than 10 per day, but the winners in all categories remain the 18-24 year olds who would take no less than twenty self-portraits daily. We advise the 18% of these young people who spend more than an hour trying to take THE perfect selfie not to forget to take advantage of the landscape and the loved ones, it would be a shame to return having seen nothing but their face reflected in the lens... However, the exercise of the photo does not please a proportion of holidaymakers:41% of respondents say they are upset by their partner who is not decided to let go of their camera and 15% of them are more annoyed when it comes to taking selfies. The equipment widely used to immortalize their holidays is the smartphone whose ever more advanced technology now prevails over that of a reflex camera, which remains the reference for 33% of French people. Nearly one in 10 people – the famous vintage enthusiast mentioned earlier – uses an analogue device, that is to say disposable or reusable.

Snapshots that inspire the virtual community

Social networks are a considerable distribution medium since those under 45 publish around 4 photos daily during their stay. The main effect of these shared intimate moments is to inspire the various “friends” (28%) but they can also arouse the jealousy of some (8%). For a minority of respondents, networks and travel are even inseparable:6% affirm that it is useless to take photos if they are not published and 8% even think that it is useless to go on vacation if the photos are not not shared online. Ah yes, that's going a bit far all the same... So, do you recognize yourself in these major trends? Happy holidays to all those who have already left and to those who are waiting their turn… Good luck!
