Airport Security Trays Dirtier Than Toilets, Groundbreaking Study Reveals

Everyday objects can harbor surprising levels of germs—far beyond what we expect. Toilet seats often come to mind first, carrying bacteria but posing a lower disease risk than commonly thought. However, items like electronic badges, computer keyboards, and phones are far dirtier. Add to that list the airport security trays we all touch before boarding: a new study in the peer-reviewed journal BMC Infectious Diseases identifies them as among the most contaminated spots in airports.

Cold and Flu Viruses Detected

Researchers tested high-touch surfaces and found viruses in 10% of areas, including children's play zones, escalators, passport counters, and credit card machines. The culprits? Rhinovirus (common cold) and influenza viruses. "Our research aims to educate the public about how viral infections spread," explains study researcher Jonathan Van Tram. He advocates for hand sanitizer dispensers at spots "where users touch surfaces repeatedly, before and after security." Wise advice, considering we drop phones in those trays then hold them to our ears. Pack your own wipes—your health will thank you.
