One of the sky's most dazzling displays is upon us. The Perseids, the celebrated meteor shower originating from the constellation Perseus, will grace our nights from July 17 to August 24, 2021, reaching its zenith on the night of August 12 to 13. In peak conditions, experienced observers can witness 70 to 110 shooting stars per hour, each leaving a brilliant, lingering trail of light—a feast for the eyes.
Clear skies permitting, the Perseids are best seen with the naked eye after 11 p.m., gazing northeast. For the finest experience, venture beyond city lights and ascend to higher ground. France boasts exceptional sites, including the Pic du Midi de Bigorre in the Hautes-Pyrénées at 2,877 meters, the Observatoire des Baronnies Provençales in the Hautes-Alpes, and the Black Triangle of Quercy in the Lot.
