Where Tourists Face the Highest Pickpocket Risks: Data-Driven Safety Tips

With autumn holidays underway across much of the Netherlands, nothing can spoil a trip faster than pickpockets targeting your cash, cards, or documents. Drawing from International Card Services (ICS) expertise, we've analyzed 15,000 credit card theft reports spanning over 1.5 years to pinpoint the hotspots and vulnerabilities for travelers.

Dutch tourists are most at risk in southern European destinations: Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and Greece. Stay extra vigilant in crowded squares, streets, and attractions—especially metro and train stations, where thieves thrive. A common ploy? They observe your PIN while you buy a ticket, then surround or bump you en route to snatch your card.

Notably, those aged 18-21 and over 75 are twice as likely to be victimized. 'Naivety and reduced vigilance are key factors here,' notes ICS. 'Younger travelers often overlook their belongings.' Watch for distractions too—like street performers doing tricks or 'footballers' showing off, or someone asking for directions while an accomplice strikes.
