On vacation:the airport survival guide

Nobody really likes spending time in an airport. They are busy, stressful, noisy and expensive places that we only visit because we feel like vacation. Here are some ways to easily pass your time at the airport.

Be an early bird
Airports are even less pleasant than usual if you're in the back of the security queue, want to shop tax-free and then hear your name as part of the 'last call'. Get there early.

Check in early or at home
Skip the stress-causing mega-queues and get the seat of your choice by checking in early. You may want to avoid having to search for the boarding pass by placing it on your phone and simply scanning your phone – but you should always have a printed backup with you. Your phone may be smart, but it may run out of batteries. Moreover, not all airports are so “smart”!

Take some breathing space
If you go by car and book your parking space in advance, you usually save money. But it's also critical for your peace of mind. Driving in circles in a desperate search for a parking space is normally no fun, especially when you watch the plane take off without you.

Book a hotel If your flight departs at a miserable hour in the morning, consider investing in a room in an airport hotel. You can stay in bed longer, and if a lack of public transport means expensive taxis early in the morning, you can save money.

Be prepared for the security
Airport security can be stressful, especially if the queues are long and you're short on time. Get through security quickly by knowing the rules and being prepared. You know the essentials:do not carry sharp or flammable items, put liquids in 100 ml bottles in a clear plastic bag, place your laptops and tablets separately in a container.

Bring a survival kit
Many of us have experienced that horrible moment when the information screen suddenly shows that your flight has been delayed for several hours. Granted, it's not as bad as flashing the dreaded "canceled" word, but it's still a bummer. Hours to kill in a boring airport can be stressful, so pack a lightweight survival kit. Pack a phone charger, a sleeping mask, a stack of books, underwear and some snacks in your hand luggage.
