We highly recommend Cafeteria and Lunchroom van Hulzen for an outstanding lunch or dinner in Elst. Curious about the menu, service, and atmosphere? We've visited multiple times as locals and are sharing our firsthand insights below.
We've called Elst home since July, raising our family in this charming village of about 21,000 residents in Gelderland. Nestled between Arnhem and Nijmegen, it offers the best of rural tranquility with urban conveniences nearby. Surrounded by farms yet boasting a vibrant village center on Dorpstraat—packed with shops and supermarkets—it's perfect for cycling and soaking in the scenery.
What truly sets Elst apart as a village is its warm, welcoming community. After years in bustling The Hague, the friendliness here is refreshing. Terraces buzz with locals, and everyone greets you with a smile.
Elst gains fame during the Four Days Marches, when the route passes through on day one. Visitors flock to its restaurants and lunchrooms, hop on bikes, or explore the historic church museum (temple).
Located on Dorpstraat, this spot offers cozy outdoor tables, ground-floor seating, and upstairs areas with chairs and stunning views of the bustling shopping street—ideal for relaxed dining.
Family-friendly vibes shine through: kids can play with Duplo at the table, and there's a dedicated children's menu.
Upstairs, you'll find spotless, separate restrooms for men and women, plus a coat rack. Order at the counter downstairs or let staff take it at your table—drinks arrive in minutes, and food follows promptly.
Beyond full meals, grab a quick snack, coffee with apple pie, or indulgent ice cream. They also offer gluten-free options; just ask the counter staff or server. Mention allergies, and the team accommodates carefully during prep.
During a shopping morning, we skipped cycling home for lunch and spontaneously chose van Hulzen. The extensive menu and fair prices impressed us from the start—we've returned twice since: once as a family, once with just my husband, daughter, and me.
Our latest visit (fully self-funded) featured plate menus with fries, raw veggie salad, mayo, and meat. My daughter loved her hamburger, my husband savored the Jägerschnitzel, and I enjoyed the satay. Portions were generous, fresh, and flavorful, paired with drinks.
Our daughter left some burger but made room for a scoop of double Swiss chocolate ice cream—she was hooked after her first taste.
We rate Cafeteria and Lunchroom van Hulzen a solid 9 out of 10.
