Looking for an unforgettable outing with kids? As parents who've explored countless family spots, we highly recommend NEMO Science Museum in Amsterdam. It's been a few years since our last visit, but the memories remain vivid—it's an absolute must for families.
Children often shy away from formal learning, but NEMO transforms science into playful experiments and interactive discovery. This renowned museum sparks curiosity at a kid-friendly level, appealing not just to young ones but also teens and adults alike.
Spanning multiple floors with themed zones and countless interactive exhibits, NEMO lets kids touch, test, and engage everywhere. Highlights include a real laboratory where children don white coats and conduct supervised experiments (age restrictions apply).
We traveled by train to Amsterdam Centraal, then enjoyed a quick 10-minute walk to the museum. Its striking ship-like architecture, surrounded by water, immediately captivates.
Inside, the fun never stops. Our group—us, our kids, sister-in-law, her husband, and nephew—stayed engaged the entire time. Favorites included a screen aging you over decades and a fully equipped laboratory with all the bells and whistles, helping kids grasp scientific processes.
Throughout, interactive screens and devices teach playfully across subjects, suiting ages 10–16 perfectly too.
Up top, a restaurant with an outdoor terrace offers panoramic views of Amsterdam and the water. We grabbed fries and snacks—fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced. The kids loved it, though our visit's weather dimmed the terrace; sunnier days promise perfection. Similar views await at spots like Ripley's Believe It or Not.
