Looking for a standout family holiday activity? On Saturday, June 2, we took the family to SEA LIFE Oberhausen. Dive into our firsthand experience, complete with photos, to preview this underwater wonder.
We visited SEA LIFE Scheveningen years ago, but it fell flat with the kids then. Now older (adult and nearly adult), they were thrilled at the chance to explore SEA LIFE Oberhausen. After delays from illness, we finally went—and the enthusiasm was real. The whole family loved it, making it an ideal holiday tip for families.
Located on the promenade near CentrO, it's just a 400-meter walk from the shopping center. Legoland Oberhausen is nearby too—great for younger kids (though my son was tempted by its Marvel theme).
After entry, follow the path through immersive underwater worlds, including a massive walk-through tunnel where fish, turtles, and sharks glide overhead. Home to over 2 million liters of water and 5,000+ sea creatures, it's Germany's largest aquarium. Fun fact: It houses Germany's biggest shark breeding station, where sharks are raised on-site.
Spot rays during guided talks (in German, so best for older kids), catch fish feedings if timed right, and learn about marine life. Loop back for touch pools—feel a shark egg or other wonders.
The vibrant, kid-friendly design—with colorful decor like diving suits—keeps it engaging. It's educational too, highlighting plastic pollution impacts and marine facts. Until July 22, 2018, kids get a discovery booklet for interactive learning.
The fixed route ensures nothing's missed, ending at a packed souvenir shop (affordable trinkets available) and restaurant with kids' menus, a Lego play area, and an open-top shark tank.
Even corridors to the toilets burst with cheerful colors, sparking kids' imaginations—perfect photo ops (we snapped some family pics there).
