5 Tips for outings with children in The Hague

Discover The Hague together with your family. I have 5 tips for outings with children in The Hague especially for you. We also made these outings ourselves, so I am writing from experience. With the exception of the Gevangenpoort, all outings are suitable for children of all ages.

Discover The Hague

Hubby has lived in The Hague almost all his life, our children were born there and I myself have lived in The Hague for over 15 years. After our adventure in the tropics (lived in Suriname for 13 years) it was time to rediscover 'our' city. This is perfectly possible during a staycation or, as in our case, during a visit to family (a large part lives in The Hague and surroundings).

The Hague has a lot to offer in terms of museums and with two amusement parks there is also plenty to do. Outings that I do not cover, but which are certainly also worthwhile with children, are Madurodam, Duinrell and Omniversum. I visited the first two mentioned very often as a child, but I haven't been there for a long time. We have visited the Omniverse before, although I have to say that I don't have good memories of the last time.

But that was just me, since I had just had a very severe migraine attack, during which I lay flat for 3 days. The cool film effect in the Omniversum did not have a good effect on me and unfortunately I already left the room after a few minutes. The children did enjoy the film.

5 Tips for outings with children in The Hague

Below you will find 5 tips for outings with children in The Hague. We also made all the trips ourselves, where I must say that the children were already a lot older then. However, most outings are suitable for children of all ages, depending on interests.

1. Sealife Scheveningen

The Sealife in Scheveningen is located directly on the boulevard and can be perfectly combined with a day at the beach. It is a small-scale aquarium set up in a former swimming pool (which I have fond memories of). It was a bit disappointing for my children, but that was mainly because you can get through it fairly quickly and the children were already a bit older during our visit. However, this is very doable with small children up to about 10 years old. Then the small size is actually an advantage. There is a lot to see and do and the children also learn a lot without noticing.

2. Museon The Hague

The Museon in The Hague has many activities aimed at children all year round, but especially during the holidays. When we were there, the children could do an interactive treasure hunt with all kinds of assignments. You learned a lot about other cultures and history. For example, we were allowed to walk a 'fashion show' with clothes from 1800 and we learned a lot about bygone times. The activities change all the time, so be sure to take a look at the website so you don't miss anything.

3. Adventure

While Avonturia used to be just a pet store (Vogelkelder) hidden in a side street off Fahrenheit Street, today it is much more than a pet store. Of course you will find all kinds of supplies for pets, just like animals themselves, but you can also enjoy a nice outing with your family here. Children can discover animals during a special treasure hunt, there is a large pond with parrots and flamingos (run free) and there is a cozy restaurant. All in all, you can safely spend a few hours here and children can enjoy themselves here.

4. Prison Gate The Hague

The Gevangenpoort in The Hague is especially suitable for older children, because it is quite impressive. My kids thought it was a great and slightly creepy outing. During a guided tour you will learn more about the different prisoners who have been here and you will discover everything about the torture that the prisoners have undergone. I have to be honest, I'm glad we live in a slightly more civilized time, because the torture was not tender. You can also see the various torture devices, so that history comes to life.

5. Drievliet

Just on the outskirts of The Hague you will find the Drievliet family park, which my children just can't get enough of. The park is not too big, has the right attractions for young and old and is also very conveniently laid out. Due to this layout, there is a separation between attractions for small and large children, which is so easy. Don't expect breakneck roller coasters, just fun attractions suitable for the whole family. As said:my children love Drievliet and soon we will travel to The Hague again to go to the amusement park.
