Visit Paris by Train: Take the Thalys!

When my parents offered to babysit our daughter Laura during a school holiday break, my husband and I seized the chance for a couples' getaway. We chose a quick Paris city trip via the high-speed Thalys train—book your tickets and hotel, and you're in the heart of the city in no time.

After six years without traveling abroad as a couple, I was thrilled. Boarding the train felt like stepping back into our pre-parenthood days: pure freedom to relax and plan spontaneously, without toddler demands.

By Train to Paris: Arrive at Gare du Nord

Thalys drops you at the magnificent Gare du Nord station. From here, the Paris Métro whisks you to major sights in minutes. Train travel is relaxing, eco-friendly, and far superior to driving. This trip, we focused on adults-only experiences we'd skip with the family.

Our Child-Free Paris Itinerary: What We Did

As avid walkers, we explored on foot—perfect after the train ride and ideal for soaking in Paris's details beyond the Métro.

1. Strolling Along the Seine and Notre-Dame

We began at Jardin des Plantes, blooming vibrantly in spring. From there, a scenic riverside path leads to Notre-Dame, with breathtaking views across the Seine. The quays buzz with lovers, amplifying Paris's romantic allure.

2. Impressionist Masterpieces at Musée d'Orsay

Art lovers, skip the Louvre crowds for Musée d'Orsay. Housed in a stunning former train station, it showcases vibrant Impressionist works by Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh—think sunlit picnics, boating scenes, and blooming meadows.

Don't miss Renoir's enchanting Young Girls at the Piano. Gaze down from the upper level to the sculpture hall and massive clock. ⇒ Book skip-the-line tickets in advance here to avoid queues.

Tickets arrive via email after quick online purchase with card payment. Worth the small premium for seamless entry. The site also offers Paris attractions passes.

3. Luxembourg Gardens

Escape the hustle in these serene gardens. Grab coffee from a nearby kiosk, claim a classic green chair, and unwind—especially on a sunny day.

4. Sipping Wine in Authentic Parisian Cafés

Hit happy hour (6-9 PM) in Montmartre near Basilique du Sacré-Cœur—wander charming alleys and try Café La Chope du Château Rouge en route. Le Marais, by Centre Pompidou, blends great drinks with boutique shopping.

5. Dining on the Eiffel Tower

My husband's surprise: dinner at 9 PM on the first level. Welcomed with champagne, we savored sunset views over the Seine. Post-meal, stroll beneath the twinkling tower—pure romance!

Not budget-friendly, but unforgettable. Reserve months ahead on the official Eiffel Tower website; tables book fast.

Do you travel abroad kid-free? Paris was magical for us. What's your go-to couples' spot?
