Fez City Break: Step into Morocco's Magical Medina World

Planning my city trips for this year, Fez stands out at the top of my wishlist. A visit to Fez transports you to another world entirely.

My Passion for Travel

Honestly, compared to many avid travelers, my experiences are modest but meaningful. Born near Munich, Germany, I lived there until age ten. As a child, I frequently visited Austria, and at nine, I explored Yugoslavia—now Croatia—including unforgettable Dubrovnik. The warmth of the locals left a lasting impression on young me. Croatia remains a favorite, and I plan to return.

I've also journeyed to Belgium, France, England, Suriname (where I lived for nearly 13 years and raised my children), the U.S. (New York, just a month after 9/11 with a newborn), and Turkey. That's four continents: Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Now, Africa beckons—and Fez in Morocco makes it accessible without a long haul.

Why Fez: A Fairytale Medina Awaits

Beyond checking off a new continent, Fez captivates with its riches. Morocco's oldest city, its ancient medina feels like a living fairytale—narrow alleys bustling with donkeys and horses, vibrant old houses, authentic shops, tanneries, spice stalls, and lively squares.

As someone who thrives on cultural immersion, I can't wait for the souks: vibrant markets alive with colors, fresh fruit aromas, and endless stalls to browse, touch, smell, and buy from. I'll definitely pick up Morocco-famous argan oil and natural cosmetics.

Don't miss Place Seffarine, a gem for handmade treasures. Score affordable leather goods, ceramics, and metalwork crafted on-site by skilled artisans. Watch them at work in this under-the-radar spot, free from tourist crowds.

Unwind with Moroccan Flavors and Rituals

After a day weaving through the medina, recharge with Fez's culinary scene. Street stalls or rooftop restaurants offer stunning views. Savor local favorites like harira (lentil soup), tagine, and refreshing mint tea.

For ultimate relaxation, try a hammam. Traditional ones deliver an authentic, invigorating scrub; those in riads and hotels ease Western visitors into this ancient ritual.

Stay in an Authentic Riad

No Fez trip is complete without a riad—a traditional Moroccan house or palace centered around a lush courtyard, often with a pool. Browsing options online, many look dreamy. Imagine waking to birdsong amid native plants and dipping into cool waters.

For now, I'm dreaming—but soon, Fez may become reality, crossing it off my list.
