How to Travel Safely with Your Pet: Essential Expert Tips

Plan Ahead

Deciding to bring your pet on vacation is exciting, but start planning medical and administrative requirements early. International trips may require weeks of preparation, depending on the destination. Airlines have strict policies: cats and dogs under 6 kg can travel in the cabin, along with assistance dogs. Larger pets go in the hold, except for prohibited breeds (Categories 1 and 2) considered too dangerous to fly.

Required Documents for Europe

EU rules standardize travel for cats, dogs, and ferrets. Within the European Union, ensure vaccinations (rabies in particular), identification via tattoo or microchip, and an EU Pet Passport. This passport is also valid in Vatican City, Switzerland, Iceland, and Monaco.

Prepare Your Pet

Choose an airline-approved crate for safe travel by car, train, or plane—it keeps your pet secure and avoids distractions. Acclimate them early: let them explore and scent-mark the crate. If they've never ridden in a car, start with short trips. For long journeys, get vet-recommended motion sickness treatment. Safe travels!
