Planning holidays with your pet can be challenging for owners. While some choose to board their furry or feathered companions, many prefer bringing them along. This is a great option when destinations welcome animals, but strict regulations—especially on beaches—require careful planning. Without it, your trip could turn into staying home with your cat. At HomeToGo.fr, we've identified the most pet-friendly accommodations and spots across France to make your getaway seamless.
Among France's 13 regions, five stand out for welcoming pets. Grand Est leads with 38.2% of accommodations pet-friendly, closely followed by Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (37.5%), Corsica (37.1%), Occitania (34%), Brittany (33.5%), and Nouvelle-Aquitaine (32.9%). Île-de-France trails at 17%, but Paris shows progress: from 1,400 pet-welcoming rentals in 2015 to 6,342 today.
Pet-friendly beaches are rare due to health and safety rules, with some closing seasonally. Always check signage on arrival. In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Esclamandes Beach in Fréjus (Var) allows leashed dogs, including swimming. The same applies to Les Eclaireurs Beach in Roquebrune-sur-Argens (Var). In Brittany, Plouharnel Beach permits swimming but requires leashes from June 1 to September 30; Olonne-sur-Mer Beach bans swimming but mandates leashes year-round. Corsica offers Porto-Vecchio Beach (leash required, no swimming July-August) and Bonifacio Beach (swimming allowed).
To ensure a smooth trip, carry your pet's documents (vaccinations, microchip number), pack a portable water bowl and fresh water for regular hydration, pick up waste promptly, and supervise closely—especially near families with children.
Happy holidays to you and your pet!
