After finally booking your dream trip, it's natural to want to share the excitement with the world—often by posting a photo of your boarding pass. But this innocent-looking gesture exposes far more sensitive information than you might imagine.
Steve Hui, General Manager of IFlyFlat, explains that boarding passes reveal key details: your name, flight information, reservation number, and a barcode. In malicious hands, these enable access to personal data like stopovers, seat assignments, ticket references, loyalty card numbers, and even the last four digits of your credit card used for payment.
The barcode packs even more: traveler identity, flight number, reservation reference, ticket number, and loyalty card info—enough for someone to potentially alter or cancel your booking.
While bad actors are rare, the stakes are high. Instead of risking it, share a destination photo with a quick caption. It captures the thrill just as well, safely.
