We've previously shared the magical story of a photographer proposing under the aurora borealis. The allure of polar lights continues to captivate travelers worldwide. Whether it's the aurora borealis in the north or aurora australis in the south, witnessing this natural spectacle from the skies is now possible. New Zealand's Aurora Australis airline made it a reality with a dedicated four-hour commercial flight on March 23, 2017, solely focused on viewing the stunning lights en route to the South Pole.
Lucky passengers enjoyed prime window seats for unobstructed views as the plane flew toward the South Pole, crossing paths with the aurora australis. The airline sold only window seats to maximize the experience. Additional flights are scheduled for next year during peak viewing seasons, as these lights aren't visible year-round. While the adventure requires travel to New Zealand, tickets range from €2,600 in economy to €5,600 in first class— a premium for this once-in-a-lifetime aerial display.
For now, it's a luxury pursuit, but we hope such experiences become more accessible as demand grows and prices potentially ease.
