Not long ago, we shared a map of the best (and least ideal) countries for relocation, overlooking a crucial factor: quality of life for vegetarians. Vegetarianism—eschewing all animal flesh—is surging, alongside trendy veganism. Major brands are adapting, like McDonald’s Grand Veggie, with vegetarian options proliferating in supermarkets. Yet restaurants remain challenging, especially abroad.
Oliver’s Travel, experts in holiday accommodation rentals, analyzed data to map the world’s top destinations for vegetarians.
Using three key indices—number of vegetarian-friendly restaurants, reception capacity (population divided by such restaurants), and average annual meat consumption per capita—the Seychelles lead, followed closely by Thailand and Malaysia. Fourth is the African archipelago of Sao Tome and Principe, then Peru, Singapore, Cambodia, the Solomon Islands, the United Kingdom, and Botswana in 10th. France ranks 31st.
Why few European entries despite rising popularity? It’s a recent shift here, unlike cultures where vegetarian and omnivorous dishes coexist seamlessly on menus.
