Finland Tops World Happiness Report 2018: Why Nordic Countries Dominate the Rankings

It's no secret that Nordic countries consistently rank among the happiest places on Earth. The United Nations' World Happiness Report, unveiled at the Vatican last Wednesday, confirms this trend. Following Norway's win last year, Finland now claims the top spot—not just for residents, but also for immigrants. Despite harsh winters and limited sunlight, Finns thrive with remarkable well-being.

A Comprehensive Study of Global Happiness

The annual report surveys about 1,000 people per country on their life satisfaction, rated from 1 to 10. Key factors include compassion, freedom, generosity, honesty, health, social support, and effective governance. Economist Jeffrey D. Sachs, a lead author since 2012, notes that governments increasingly rely on these insights: "They are using happiness indicators for decision-making and policy development."

France Rises to 23rd, While Others Slip

Finland leads, followed closely by fellow Nordics Norway and Denmark. Rounding out the top 10: Iceland, Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, and Australia.

France improves notably, jumping 8 spots to 23rd. However, it ranks 29th out of 117 for immigrant happiness. The U.S. drops 4 places to 18th amid political shifts post-Trump inauguration, Germany slips to 15th, and the UK holds at 19th.

At the bottom: South Sudan, Central African Republic, and Burundi—nations grappling with poverty and ethnic conflict.
