Thailand Leads as Top Backpacking Destination for Dutch Travelers

Backpacking has exploded in popularity, with more travelers hitting the road—or skies—with just a backpack in tow, chasing adventure worldwide. For Dutch backpackers, Thailand reigns supreme as the most favored destination, according to a survey by Beslist.nl in partnership with the Around the Globe travel community. Asia dominates preferences, with Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia topping the list. Low living costs stand out as a key draw. Australia appeals to working holiday enthusiasts, Laos offers authentic Asian immersion, and New Zealand captivates nature lovers. Rounding out the top 10 are Peru, Nepal, and Spain.

Backpackers value connecting with locals, immersing in new cultures, and building real-life experiences. Must-haves include a camera, smartphone, and tablet. Practical essentials like sturdy shoes, a reliable backpack, credit card, sleeping sheet, flip-flops, flashlight, and multi-tool pocket knife also top recommendations. Nearly 20% of seasoned travelers dismiss mosquito nets as unnecessary weight—hostels in needy areas provide them. Overpacking medicines or luggage, however, hinders the journey.
