A recent ANWB Travel Insurance survey reveals that four out of five Dutch people don't fully understand when cancellation insurance applies or what it reimburses. While 86% recognize coverage for illness or death of a close relative, far fewer know about other valid reasons.
This knowledge gap is evident in the top five lesser-known scenarios:
• Unexpected cancellation by a travel companion with a valid reason (only 18% aware)
• A car breakdown that can't be fixed en route (20% aware)
• Accepting a new job or becoming unemployed (21% aware)
• Divorce after booking (22% aware)
• Discovering pregnancy after booking (25% aware)
Rebooking and short flight delays cause biggest confusion
Rebooking a holiday isn't covered by cancellation insurance—yet 14% mistakenly believe it is. Delays under eight hours also aren't reimbursed, while those over eight hours are; only 44% know this distinction.
The study also found that 18% of Dutch travelers opt for short-term cancellation insurance, 46% have ongoing coverage, and 34% have none. The primary reason for skipping it? Low perceived risk (49%). Men are especially optimistic, with 58% vs. 40% of women downplaying risks. Men also show slightly better awareness of coverage scenarios.
Illness and accidents drive most claims
Among policyholders, 31% have filed a claim. Common situations include:
• Illness or accident of self or travel partner (18%)
• Illness or death of family at home (13%)
• Negative travel advice (4%)—note: this isn't valid.
