The thrill of 'first-time' travel experiences can significantly enhance confidence, expand horizons, and pave the way for greater success in life. This insight comes from a comprehensive Booking.com survey of over 15,000 respondents across 20 countries. Whether it was their first trip abroad, visit to a new destination, or solo journey, nearly two-thirds (65%) reported a major confidence boost. While first-time travel often feels daunting, 61% of travelers agreed the pre-trip nerves were ultimately unfounded.
This newfound energy and self-assurance frequently inspires bold life decisions. Among respondents, 13% credited their inaugural trip with kickstarting a new job or career, another 13% with beginning a meaningful relationship, and 21% with pursuing something entirely new.
First-time travels also unlock enriching opportunities, such as connecting with new people (40%), savoring novel cuisines and ingredients (43%), picking up a new language (29%), and gaining insights into other cultures (29%). For many, these moments outshine milestones like a first date (53%), first job (51%), new friendship (62%), or even a first kiss (36%).
Far from deterring future adventures, initial travel jitters propel exploration: two-thirds (64%) embraced them rather than shying away. A majority noted that discovering a new destination motivates visits to unfamiliar spots, activities, or stays. In fact, nearly half (45%) planned more adventurous 2017 trips, 56% aimed farther from home, over half (54%) eyed extra weekend getaways, and 47% sought uncharted territories beyond friends' experiences.
