Dutch Travelers Optimistic for 2021 Trips as Vaccines Spark Renewed Hope, Booking.com Research Finds

The coronavirus pandemic has profoundly disrupted daily life, marking 2020 as one of the toughest years on record. Social distancing and stay-at-home measures became the norm, leaving international travel uncertain. Yet, amid ongoing challenges, fresh Booking.com research reveals that wanderlust remains undimmed. Travelers see a brighter path ahead, fueled by vaccine rollouts and progress against COVID-19.

Booking.com, dedicated to helping everyone explore the world more easily, surveyed over 28,000 travelers across 28 countries and territories. The insights highlight what excites people most about safe travel resuming.

Vaccine Rollout Restores Traveler Optimism Even as the pandemic persists, 63% of Dutch travelers report greater hope for 2021 journeys due to vaccines. Likewise, 60% plan to travel more than in restricted 2020. Confidence is strong: 54% say they'll only travel abroad if vaccinated (rising to 69% among those over 55), and 51% prefer destinations with vaccination programs. Still, caution lingers—31% question if vaccines truly enhance travel safety.

Travel Tops Priorities Once Pandemic Ends Restrictions took a toll: 42% of Dutch respondents noted negative mental health effects, and 38% felt trapped at home. Now, 55% value travel more than before, with 76% prioritizing holidays over career advancement. Eager to resume, 42% have planned future trips during lockdown, and 36% saved vacation days for longer getaways. Beach vacations stay popular—40% expect a seaside escape by summer 2021. Post-stress recovery drives choices: 17% eye relaxing beach or spa breaks first, versus 11% for active adventures or 5% for city trips.
