Where do Dutch travelers dream of vacationing in 2022? A comprehensive survey by Columbus Travel reveals a strong return to far-flung destinations. Surprisingly, the number one spot goes to a European country boasting natural wonders that rival the most remote global hotspots.
Over 5,000 Dutch travelers shared their bucket lists in response to a call from Columbus Travel and Riksja Travel, the Netherlands' leading adventure travel specialist. When asked about their top countries for 2022, 14% named Iceland as their top choice, securing its position at number one. Canada followed closely with 12.5% of respondents, while Argentina and Australia each drew interest from one in ten Dutch holidaymakers.
Aside from frontrunner Iceland and runner-up Lapland, this year's most coveted spots for Dutch explorers are distant horizons. In addition to Canada, Argentina, and Australia, the USA, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, and Cuba stand out. Nature lovers cite stunning landscapes as the primary draw. "The top 10 is incredibly diverse—we're eager to rediscover every corner of the globe," notes Mark Mackintosh, editor-in-chief at Columbus Travel. "This survey signals a shift from last year; we're boldly dreaming beyond Europe once more."
"Our travelers are primed to venture far afield again," adds Fenny Koppen, CEO of Riksja Travel. "Bookings for Africa, the US, and Canada are surging, but Iceland remains a bestseller among our European offerings."
