Why Travel Delivers Greater Happiness Than Weddings or New Jobs: Global Booking.com Survey

Forget wedding days or landing a new job—travel is the true path to joy. A Booking.com survey of 17,000 respondents across 17 countries found 49% rate vacations as more happiness-inducing than their wedding day (49%), dating their partner (51%), a new job (50%), an engagement (45%), or even having a child (29%). What's more, 77% book trips specifically for a happiness boost.

Whether backpacking, staying at B&Bs, family trips, or remote escapes, travel elevates moods for the majority. This explains why 56% prioritize holidays over personal items like clothes, jewelry, or gadgets.

The emotional high kicks off with planning and peaks during the trip. Nearly three-quarters (72%) feel excited just researching destinations, while over half (56%) say booking makes them happiest—underscoring the value of direct bookings for perfect accommodations. A third (35%) start planning months ahead, and 5% begin a full year in advance. Seeking real happiness? Start planning your next getaway today!
