Ways to be environmentally conscious while traveling

Nowadays we do everything we can to live environmentally conscious. But do you also think about that when you go on vacation? Instead of making an effort to be aware only at home, why not make some small, consistent changes to the way you travel the world? That way you can integrate “green” into your travel routine and hopefully help make life better for future generations. If you want to travel greener this year, we've got some travel tips to help! Whether you're heading to the beach or the mountains, getting lost in nature or visiting a big city, our simple guide will help you have a great vacation while protecting the environment.

Select a suitable destination
– How far do you have to travel? Most modes of transport contribute to climate change. To minimize your holiday emissions, choose a destination closer to home and/or a destination that you can reach with a different transport than the plane.

– Look into ecotourism options. Many travel companies now offer holidays that support sustainable development, do not negatively impact the environment and provide financial support to local communities.

Choose the best way to get there
– Choose the most environmentally friendly form of transportation. Can you drive or take the train to your destination instead of flying? Try to avoid short-haul flights (<500 km), and if you must fly, choose airlines with higher load factors and more efficient aircraft. Choose the right place to stay
– Choose eco-friendly accommodation. Look for hotels and other accommodations with effective waste treatment systems that recycle, are energy efficient, and may use eco-friendly energy sources such as solar or hydropower.

Be a responsible guest
– Respect the local environment. Stay on trails and public footpaths; do not remove plants or feed animals; and never litter.

– Choose reputable, environmentally conscious tour operators.

– Save water. Take a shower instead of a bath; use a refillable water container, sterilize water if necessary instead of buying bottled water. Minimize your use of personal care products and detergents to wash linen and re-use your hotel towels and bedding.

– Limit energy consumption. This includes your use of air conditioning and hot water. Turn off all lights when you leave the hotel room.

– Properly dispose of sanitary waste. Do not flush cotton swabs, condoms, tampons and plastics down the toilet.

– Recycle and reduce. Recycle newspapers, magazines and your water bottles and reduce the number of bags, napkins and disposable cups you use when you eat.

– Choose environmentally friendly transport. Instead of renting a car, choose other ways to get around such as taxis, trains or buses. You can also rent bicycles in many places. And don't forget walking!

– Avoid harmful recreational activities. Avoid sports that have a significant harmful impact on the environment, or opt for more progressive businesses (e.g. golf courses that recycle water).

Coming home…
– See what souvenirs you're buying! Think twice before purchasing products made from endangered species, including animal skins and body parts, tortoiseshell, ivory or coral. They may be illegal.
