In the May holidays to southern Denmark

Denmark, have you been there before? The lance is really bucket list worthy! For example, the East Danish islands are beautiful. And South Denmark, that seems like a really nice place to visit. A friend who had been there with her family came back with very enthusiastic stories. They had made a very nice tour. They visited beaches, historic towns and lots of interesting sights. The photos from their vacation spoke for themselves. What beautiful pictures! Her children, my children's best friends, also talked a lot about their Danish adventures. Just like me, my boyfriend and our children had also become curious about southern Denmark as a holiday destination. Time to contact Dansk.nl, the holiday specialist for Denmark!

Look up

Indeed. Why don't we take a good look at the countries above the Netherlands, instead of especially the south. During the summer holidays we are going to spend a holiday in Italy. That has been the case for years. But there is so much more beauty. Sometimes you need to be reminded. That's what my girlfriend did. And while talking about vacation plans to southern Denmark, I spoke to more and more people who have been here. They all agree on one thing:Denmark is beautiful!

A beautiful country, Denmark. Small but expansive. Rough and sweet at the same time. And the Danes I've met so far made an extremely friendly impression on me. Moreover, the Danes also look very handsome. † So yes! Denmark appeals to me! I don't know the country very well. I know that the capital is Copenhagen and that it consists of several islands. But besides the funny Danish language, the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and former football player Søren Lerby, I don't really know anything about it. Time to get acquainted with Southern Denmark. Also because it is not that far away, it seems to me the ideal May holiday destination for our family.

That's why we go to southern Denmark during the May holidays

Normally we don't go away during the May holidays. This year we wanted to use this holiday for a break. For the following reasons:we only have the last weeks of the school holidays off, so we still have quite some time to bridge. In addition, my daughter is in group eight of primary school, an exciting year, full of emotion. Cito tests, choice of school, parties, final camp and musical. That sweetie could use some distraction.

Dansk.nl told me that the May holiday is a very suitable period to go to Denmark. It is low season there, so the prices to book a holiday home are very favorable! Southern Denmark is also surprisingly close. From our hometown in South-East Brabant it is less than 800 kilometers away. That is a bit different from the almost 1300 kilometers to Italy. In addition, many Dutch people can be found in southern Denmark during this period, which makes it extra fun for our children. They often play nicely together, but if you're a whole girl of twelve, you don't always want to play with your brother of ten.

Holiday wishes in a row

How do you plan a trip to a country where you don't know anything or anyone? I was the first to list our holiday wishes. We really want to use this holiday to completely relax. I love to get a breath of fresh air on the beach. After almost 22 years, I switched jobs this year. A very good choice, but you have to learn a lot. So my head is quite full. How nice is it to switch off completely during long beach walks. And in the meantime, of course, look for the most beautiful shells.

Like I said, it's been a tough year for my daughter too. Making the final choice of school is difficult for her, the changes that are all to come are secretly quite exciting. She is a real outdoor child and I think it is important that she can play outside and be a real child for a while.

Mother and daughter want to go to the sea, but visiting cute towns, beautiful harbor towns and good food and shopping also gives us a wonderfully relaxed feeling. But let me not forget our dear men. Father and son especially love adventure, nature and castles. All four of us can really enjoy relaxing at a beautiful destination. It is clear that there must be something for all four of us to experience. And that will work in southern Denmark. This May holiday we want to see boats, get a breath of fresh air, stroll in lovely towns and adventure!

The first preparations for our holiday to southern Denmark

Now that it is clear what we want to see and do in Southern Denmark, the preparations can begin. For this you can ask around with acquaintances or scour the internet. I have done both. There is a lot of information to be found about Southern Denmark. Fortunately, Dansk.nl was there. They guided me through the mountain of information during a pleasant conversation. By asking specific questions, they were able to provide our family with suitable holiday advice.

Based on our holiday wishes, they looked at which region best suited our wishes. They also know how to translate our preferences into an ideal accommodation for us with regard to the stay during the holiday. There are many accommodation options. Holiday parks, hotels and holiday homes. And you know, I now have experience with camping with the tent, but staying in a holiday home in the spring is very nice.

Accommodation Danland Bogense

On advice we have chosen to stay four nights in Holiday Park Danland Bogense. A very nice holiday park with a fantastic location on the north coast of the island of Funen. By the way, the Danes pronounce this as “Fuun”. Funen is also known as the “Garden of Denmark”. That says enough! The holiday park has modern apartments, with free internet! We chose apartment type 4. This has a terrace on the ground floor so that our children can easily go out on their own. Furthermore, there is everything you need to relax after a beautiful day in the area.

Southern Denmark in a nutshell

Why did Dansk.nl recommend this holiday park in particular? Because it is a nice park where many families stay. But especially because there is so much to see in this area in southern Denmark. It all starts with the place where holiday park Danland is located:Bogense. This port town is 700 years old, exudes a maritime atmosphere and has nice restaurants and shops and a beach! With this, the holiday wishes of the ladies are already granted!

In addition to Bogense, you can also visit Odense from the holiday park. In addition to being a colorful and historic city, Odense is also a must-see for fairytale lovers:the writer Hans Christian Andersen was born here and you can visit his birthplace. We love his fairy tale “the emperor's new clothes”. You know that fairytale? Our kids always laughed about this. But his other fairy tales and stories are also true childhood sentiment for me.

Besides visiting cities, there is of course more to experience. Much more! While reading we saw so many nice sights. Then I am only talking about the Southern Denmark region. Our children nowadays have their own opinion and also want to participate in decision-making about holiday destinations. So also about southern Denmark. Totally fine. Because if they are having a good time, then so are we as parents. Curious about what our children would like to see? Together with them I made a favorites list:

1. GIVSKUD ZOO Safari Park

This outing is my number one priority for my children. In this Safari Park you drive yourself between the elephants and rhinoceroses, or you ride with the safari bus. You see giraffes that sometimes, literally, look inside. During the safari there is an opportunity to park your car (in the designated parking spaces), and from there you can walk to the monkey enclosure. This way our own monkeys can walk among the monkeys! That's cool! There are also beautiful picnic areas, a large playground and there is a dino camp where children can search for fossils.

2. Egeskov Slot

Egeskov Slot is an old castle, with a lot of history. The kids, and so do we, would love to see a real castle. That's a good thing, because part of this castle can be visited. The castle is still inhabited by a young family. So you might just run into the little count or countess of Egeskov. There is an exhibition of classic motorcycles and cars and airplanes. The men are sure to love this!

In the castle gardens there are several cool mazes, a Segway and Tree-top course. Now I'm not much of a hero myself, but my kids think such a tree-top course is really fantastic. While they go from treetop to treetop, I imagine myself in the castle garden as a real countess!

3. Universe Science Park

In this park they want to make children and young people enthusiastic about science, technology and entrepreneurship. Now my son is already quite enthusiastic about science, so this outing is very appealing. In the park you can do a lot of cool experiments and there are cool rides. For example, our own superheroes can try to lift a car, build a rocket and explore the virtual world. A perfect outing for our own children, which, incidentally, has to be well planned as it is a bit away from our accommodation.

4. LEGOLAND Billund

LEGOLAND Billund, well known to me, is also located in Southern Denmark. But what I didn't know is that the fairly new LEGO House is a 5-minute drive from LEGOLAND. In the LEGO House the children can play, but also learn (interactively) about the history of LEGO and of course build with LEGO bricks. We have been to LEGOLAND Germany before, but the very first and in our eyes, the one and only LEGOLAND is still on our wish list. Because besides the many Lego bricks, it is also just a nice amusement park.

As you can read, we don't have to get bored in those five days. There is so much to experience. Then I haven't even mentioned the town of Ribe, where there is a real Viking center. And how about the fantastic wide beaches of the island of Rømø. This is a long way from our accommodation, but a good reason to go back to Southern Denmark again.

5. Burgundian Brabant in Denmark

Not only the many sights are a reason to go to South Denmark. What makes us as a Burgundian family from Brabant also very happy is that wherever you go in Denmark, the bakers are open every day. Fresh bread every day such as the typical Danish “Smørrebrød”. But also "kanelsnegle", buns with cinnamon and "spandauer" buns with jam or cream must be divine. And of course we should try “Snobrød”:bread dough on a stick that has to be toasted over a campfire.

But what can you really make a child happy with during a holiday? Right! An icecream! And let the Danish ice cream now be a lot bigger than the ice cream in the Netherlands. A real ice cream Valhalla! The balls are often large and you have all kinds of flavors. In the Netherlands we are happy with some disco dip on the ice cream, or a dollop of whipped cream. Whipped cream is what they call “flødeskum” in Denmark. Great word though! This is whipped cream without sugar. But the Danes have more choice, such as "guf", a kind of foam for the ice cream. Or “flødebolle”, a kind of negro kisses “syltetøj”, which resembles jam. We will probably have to work hard after these holidays, because the restaurants must also be very good, with plenty of choice from various fresh fish species.

May holidays, ideal for a discovery tour through southern Denmark

I want! We want! The nature, the adventure, the beautiful towns and beaches and the good food! We became very enthusiastic during our preparations. The May holidays are ideal for exploring southern Denmark. It's not too far to drive, great for the short May holiday, which this year largely falls in April 😉 . There is much to experience and during this period a visit to Southern Denmark is very affordable. Unlike many southern countries, it is still low season in Denmark during the May holidays. I don't know about you, but I think that's important! For example, during the May holiday you can already book a holiday home from € 199.00 for a week!
