Traveling to Tenerife with children? A reader recently asked us this question, and we were thrilled to share our positive experiences. While we occasionally enjoy kid-free getaways, Tenerife stands out as an exceptional family destination. Our recent trip confirmed it's perfect for all ages.
If you've visited before, you know its appeal. If not, our detailed travelogue reveals a wealth of family-friendly activities. We ventured beyond the typical southern resorts, exploring the north too—truly fantastic!

Tenerife proved an inspired choice for our family.
The flight might seem daunting, but we found it far more enjoyable than long car trips. After over four hours from Charleroi, Belgium—chosen to save on costs during school holidays—we landed in warmer climes. Our daughter Lotte's first flight was a highlight, influenced by her grandfather's pilot background. For tips on flying with kids or babies, check our guide.
Lanzarote with children is another great Canary Islands option.
We packed larger suitcases for our drone, but for a week-long trip, hand luggage suffices—no baggage claim delays. Ensure compliance with strict size rules. Luc tested the lightweight Leitz trolley, ideal for its compartments keeping laptop, cables, toiletries, and documents organized—perfect for teens or solo trips.
Tenerife's climate is a major draw for families. The north can be cooler and wetter than the sunny south, but we experienced mostly warm, sunny days around 16-25°C with minimal rain, thanks to sea breezes dispersing clouds.
We stayed in a charming house, but for hotels, consider:
Post-flight, we drove our Mini Countryman through the sunny south to Santa Cruz, then inland to our Interhome rental near El Rosario—a authentic, green area contrasting touristy south.
Host Cristo greeted us warmly with his dogs, guiding us to our idyllic home. Kids claimed rooms instantly. He shared local supermarket tips (budget-friendly). We unpacked, shopped, and relaxed with views, wine, and coffee—pure vacation bliss.
In six days (minus travel), we packed in must-dos for families.
This northwest port city offers stunning coastal views. Kids crab-hunted on the pier; we relaxed seaside. The boulevard leads to Lago Martiánez Park and a colorful old town. Enjoyed dinner for €50 with drinks—better value than the south.
Europe's top zoo features penguins in simulated habitats, free-flying parrots, dolphins, and orcas—including 'Morgan' trained via lights. Excellent welfare efforts and educational shows make it essential. Trainers and researchers prioritize conservation globally.
Spain's highest peak excited our kids. We secured a free summit permit months ahead, but gondola maintenance thwarted us—next time! The drive offers epic scenery. Request permits here.
Tenerife's only white-sand beach (Sahara-imported) near San Andrés is tropical paradise. Rent beds for €2.50/day; snacks available. Ideal for sand play.
Parked at Parque de la Granja, strolled to the center—authentic local vibe.
A five-hour catamaran trip delivered dozens of dolphins and whales, plus Los Gigantes cliffs. Skip glass-bottom boats; opt for open-air vessels.
A rental car unlocked freedom—from north house to south boats in an hour. Sunny Cars offers all-in insurance (damage, theft, €7.5M liability)—no extras needed.
Essential for frequent travelers like us. We've claimed for ski injuries and illness. Affordable monthly premiums provide peace of mind, even for short trips like our upcoming DFDS ferry to Newcastle.
Our first visit in 14 years won't be the last. Future plans: Lago Martiánez, Siam Park, northern hikes, La Laguna, Teide summit.
