Archeon Museum Park: Hands-On History Fun for Kids, Teens, and Adults

We were invited to explore the Archeon museum park with Frank, Luc, Lotte, and me. I worried our teenager Luc might find it childish, but he loved every minute of our full-day adventure.

Archeon: Suitable for Every Age

One standout surprise was how well Archeon caters to all ages. Wander independently to soak up history, or dive into workshops and activities. We timed our visit perfectly with the annual Roman festival, but it's equally captivating year-round.

From the entrance, it was clear: families with teens like ours, toddlers, babies, and child-free adults all thrive here. We've spotted plenty of each group enjoying themselves.

What to Experience at Archeon

This open-air museum features 43 recreated farms, houses, and huts from ancient Netherlands. To truly immerse in prehistory, Roman times, or the Middle Ages, Archeon is unmatched—see, hear, and participate in daily life from eras past.

Hands-On Activities in the Archeon Museum

Kids especially love these interactive options:

  1. Learn swordsmanship
  2. Archery
  3. Tree trunk canoeing
  4. Make fire
  5. Face painting
  6. Pull boulder
  7. Bake a plate
  8. Create fibula
  9. Make a Roman helmet
  10. Make a candle
  11. Felt bracelet

Guided Tours and Demonstrations

We skipped some activities for festival highlights like Roman battles and legion training 😉, but they're normally a must. Demonstrations draw crowds with humor, education, and audience participation—we learned legion structure, ranks, attack formations (like the turtle defense), weapons, and camp life.

Always Something Happening

Archeon's beauty? It's ideal anytime. Even without events, activities, guided tours (Prehistory, Romans, Middle Ages), temple ceremonies, and bird-of-prey shows keep it engaging. Kids track adventures with an activity pass.

Check the Archeon website for themed festivals (Romans, Vikings), prehistory weekends, or craft demos like blacksmithing.

The Zwammerdam Ships

Don't miss the excavated Zwammerdam ships under restoration—with visitor support. An expert on-site explains their design, use, and conservation process. Truly impressive.

Our Verdict

We had a fantastic day at Archeon—arrive early for more time. Varied exhibits and activities delight all ages. Food's pricey, so decide ahead. Highly recommend, like the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen.
