I traveled to Essaouira for the Windsurf World Cup, expecting boards and wind—but nothing prepared me for the spectacle. Top riders from around the world converged at the legendary Moulay Bouzerktoune spot under blazing sun and crashing waves. Enthusiasts and curious locals cheered as competitors battled the rough sea over several days, delivering jaw-dropping aerial feats and spins. They soared and twisted through the chaos like joyful kids at play. That's windsurfing's true essence: even elite champions compete with pure fun.
Enter Boujmaa Guilloul, windsurfing superstar and Essaouira legend. Dazzling in the water with his infectious smile, he's disarmingly kind onshore. As Morocco's pride, he brought the World Cup to his home waters. Boujmaa introduced me to the sport—though I struggled in practice, his mastery made me feel pro-level in spirit. I left captivated by the beauty, intensity, and grandeur, head over heels for this vibrant country, city, and energy. Despite my initiation, local cuisine added a few pounds! Kudos to all our champions.
Long live the Morocco Windsurf World Cup 2018!
