Human activity has significantly impacted natural wonders like Maya Bay on Thailand's Koh Phi Phi Leh island in the Andaman Sea. This stunning beach, popularized by the 2000 film The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Virginie Ledoyen, and Guillaume Canet, has suffered from overtourism. To allow recovery, authorities implemented a seasonal closure starting June 1, 2018, banning visitors for at least four months annually until October. This break helps marine ecosystems, particularly damaged coral reefs, regenerate after years of foot traffic and boat disturbances.
While many Thai beaches close from May to October due to monsoon season, Maya Bay remained open year-round amid high demand. Upon reopening, visitor numbers will cap at 2,000 per day. Niphon Phongsuwan, Phi Phi island's chief park ranger, noted: "I've been pushing for this for years, but Thailand's tourism-driven economy made it tough to gain traction. This should have happened a decade ago, but it's finally in place." Balancing economic needs with environmental protection presents an ongoing challenge—yet this is a promising step forward.
