Every summer, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a renowned British analyst firm, publishes its Global Liveability Index, evaluating the world's most liveable cities. Until 2017, Melbourne dominated the top spot for seven straight years. In 2018, however, Vienna, last year's runner-up, claimed the crown among 140 cities. Assessed on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure, Vienna earned perfect scores in four categories, achieving an exceptional 99.1 out of 100.
Melbourne slips to second with 98.4 out of 100, followed by Osaka (Japan) in third, Calgary (Canada) in fourth, and Sydney (Australia) in fifth. Rounding out the top 10: Tokyo (Japan) in sixth, Toronto (Canada) in seventh, Copenhagen (Denmark) in eighth, and Adelaide (Australia) in ninth and tenth. Canada leads with three cities in the rankings, ahead of Japan, while no French cities appear, as in 2017. Vienna also topped Mercer's spring 2018 quality-of-living survey, lauded for resident security, efficient public transport, and diverse cultural and recreational offerings.
