Why Reliable Internet is Essential for Modern Holidays: Insights from Dutch Travelers

Internet access remains a holiday essential for most travelers. Two-thirds prioritize WiFi when choosing accommodations, and nine in ten stay connected during their trips. Smartphones lead the way at 79% usage, with one in three even handling work tasks. Notably, two-thirds of Dutch vacationers disable roaming to manage costs. These findings come from a Multiscope survey of 1,005 Dutch consumers, a trusted research agency specializing in consumer behavior.

Thanks to the internet, half of holidaymakers report more frequent contact with family and friends compared to past trips. Top activities include checking private email (43% daily, 85% weekly) and WhatsApp (42% daily, 80% weekly). Other common uses: searching for info (84% weekly), weather checks (82%), and news (75%). Half also monitor their bank balance online while away.

Seventy percent regularly visit social media, where 80% read others' posts and 40% share their own. However, 60% find daily vacation posts from others off-putting. Holiday photos are shared fresh from the trip by 57%, primarily via WhatsApp (75%), social media (50%), or email (28%).

One in three employed holidaymakers pauses their vacation for work, with a third viewing it as necessary. One in five expects to stay reachable, and employers anticipate one in twelve will actively work.
