Dutch Travelers Favor Familiar, Safe Holidays Over Adventure

Backpacking across distant countries to visit as many places as possible in record time doesn't appeal to Dutch holidaymakers. They opt for safe, familiar choices instead. Research by travel organization Eliza was here on Dutch holiday habits reveals that nearly three-quarters (73%) of Dutch travelers return to the same country multiple times. More than a quarter (27%) frequently stay in the same holiday home, hotel, or bed & breakfast.

Sun, Sea, Beach, and Domestic Getaways Top the List
As the early bird booking season approaches, let's review last summer's trends. Among Dutch holidaymakers, 36% chose beach lounging or poolside cocktails in sunny destinations. This rose to over half (51%) for millennials (25-34 years old), while those 55+ preferred less sun exposure (27%). Domestic holidays ranked second at 22%. More adventurous options lagged: camping (10%), active holidays (10%), and city trips (9%). Only 1% embraced backpacking with hostels and shared dorms.

Most Book Holidays Less Than Three Months Ahead
While anticipating a holiday boosts well-being, Dutch travelers book relatively last-minute. The top window is zero to three months in advance (43%), followed by three to six months (36%). The 55+ group plans least ahead, with over half (54%) booking within three months.

When arranging trips, Dutch holidaymakers prefer control: over half (51%) planned and booked independently this year. Just over a quarter (28%) chose packages from online travel providers. Travel agencies were least favored at 9%.
